ABOUT THE ROLE
NIIM offers circulating tumour cell (CTC) analysis using the validated ISET-CTC system from Rarecells, France.
CTC analysis provides a tool for early detection of circulating tumour cells and other rare cells in the blood, and a means to assessing cancer status and effectiveness of the treatment for the patient.
With the ISET-CTC system the patient’s blood is filtered, stained and analysed by cyto-pathology using a bright light microscope.
The cytologist will assist with screening and CTC analysis of patients requesting the CTC test at NIIM under the supervision of the Director of Research.
The cytologist role is required to work 2-3 sessions per week of 5-7 hours each, with the possibility of increased hours in the future. Days and session times are negotiable.
Additionally, there is the potential to be involved in ongoing research projects including CTC technology and patient care, e.g. prostate cancer screening
Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- The screening of slides of filtered blood using a bright light microscope
- Analysis of CTC cells using standard cyto-morphological criteria
- Recording and reporting of findings as per protocol and standard operating procedures
- Discussion of findings with the team and the Director of Research
- Assisting in report writing
- Other tasks as required by the Director of Research
ABOUT YOU
Qualifications
Applicants should possess a degree cytology, hold a CT (ASC) qualification (Australian Society of Cytology) or equivalent, and demonstrate experience in cellular pathophysiology and cytology. Prior experience in cancer cytology and background in microbiology are highly desirable.

Essential
- Demonstrated experience in cancer cytology
- Proven record of attention to detail with a strong emphasis on accuracy
- Proven ability to work both as a team member and independently on projects
- Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of pathology accreditation and quality management systems
- Demonstrated experience in policy and procedural documentation
Highly Desirable
- Prior experience working in a research environment or involvement in research in a clinical setting
- A background in microbiology
- Experience with computer software packages
The successful applicant must be able to work productively with minimal supervision and in accordance with institutional and study-specific policies and procedures.
Remuneration
This is a part-time position (approx 0.4 FTE, negotiable), with possibility for further extension. The remuneration offered is up to $45/hr plus super, based on experience.
