THE TRUTH ABOUT ANXIETY IN CHILDHOOD

Dr Leila Masson MD MPH FRACP FACNEM DTMH IBCLC
A consultant paediatrician who specializes in nutritional and environmental health for children. She has a medical doctorate from Germany, a Master in public health from Harvard University and is a Fellow of the Royal Australian College of Physicians. Dr Masson has a paediatric practice in Bondi Beach, Sydney, lectures internationally and is the author of Children’s Health A-Z a parent’s guide to natural therapies for common childhood illnesses.

Dr Masson’s talk will cover: Anxiety may be the main concern or just be mentioned in passing for a child with health issues. Following an integrative approach, we explore the various sources of childhood anxiety – ranging from life stresses the child is not equipped to deal with, inappropriate parenting and unrealistic expectations for their level of development. As well as a lack of the basic requirements for a healthy physical and mental development – such as loving care, a whole foods diet, plenty of sleep and avoiding exposure to environmental toxins – to infections and auto-immune reactions such as PANS and PANDAS. How do you work out what causes a child’s anxiety and what treatment options are available? What questions to ask, what to look for or which tests are required? What are the potential side effects of psychiatric medications prescribed to young children and what other options are available?
