FROM NIIM
WHAT IS INTEGRATIVE MEDICINE?

‘Integrative Medicine (IM) combines conventional medicine with evidence-based complementary medicine, therapies and lifestyle interventions for optimal outcomes in health, healing and disease prevention with a supportive and empowering practitioner-patient relationship.

‘The practice of IM focuses on the whole person, is informed by evidence, and makes use of all appropriate therapeutic approaches, healthcare professionals and disciplines. IM takes into account the physical, psychological, social and spiritual state of the person to help create overall health and wellbeing, now and in the future.’

Prof Sali's Health Tips:
LIFESTYLE – Creating Healthy Changes
  • Eat well – the Mediterranean diet is a good example – incorporating more fish, fresh fruit and vegetables, olive oil, quality protein sources such as legumes; Dairy and meat consumption is not eliminated but modified – less is consumed but of a higher quality – a goats milk fetta, for example, rather than a processed cheddar
  • Togetherness - the most important aspect of the people of this region is their lifestyle, in particular the gatherings of family and friends
  • Sleep - get enough sleep. Sleep disorders could contribute to up to 70 percent of diseases
  • Stress - establish healthy responses to stress, anxiety and depression – practise meditation, seek guidance and support from health professionals, family and friends
  • Rest and Relaxation. Think of it as not so much ‘doing’ relaxation but ‘being’ in a relaxed state
  • Weight - manage your weight. A reduction in body weight of just 10% can normalise blood pressure
  • Move - being seated is not a natural position of the body – the body is designed to move. Adopt a regular Exercise regime, even a simple one such as walking daily, preferably outdoors. Any activity outside also has the added bonus of the sunshine vitamin, Vitamin D and also serotonin
  • Supplement – If needed, seek professionally prescribed supplements and herbal remedies as required
  • Happiness - embrace joy in life and create fun events to share with others
  • Chocolate - consume dark chocolate daily! (ideally two squares, 85% cocoa)

We may not be able to change the world we live in, but we can change the way we live in the world.
